Rebecca Jones is the managing editor of Bloomberg News for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, and host of the Bloomberg Australia Podcast.
Bloomberg is one of the world’s leading financial news organisations that globally produces roughly 5,000 stories a day from more than 150 newsrooms around the globe. Rebecca joined Bloomberg News in New York in 2006, and today leads the operation in her native Australia. Under Rebecca’s leadership, Australia has become a key market for subscribers.
Throughout her 20 years as an international journalist, Rebecca has covered the biggest breaking business news from 11 countries. She has appeared on the BBC and her writing has featured in the Washington Post.
Rebecca was the driving force behind the production of the acclaimed Bloomberg Originals documentary, Bushfire Babies, which explores some of the tragic long-term health impacts that are emerging since Black Summer fires of 2019-2020. The documentary was nominated as a finalist for a 2024 Walkley Mid-Year Award. Another Bloomberg Australia investigation, The Water Trade is Booming - and Sucking Australia Dry, was shortlisted for a 2024 Pulitzer Prize as part of Bloomberg’s Water Grab series.
Beyond the headlines, Rebecca is a passionate advocate for influencing Australia's cultural and educational landscape and serves as a Business Council Member at the National Gallery of Victoria, leveraging her expertise in media and passion for art, and is a mentor of undergraduate journalism students at RMIT University.
Given Rebecca’s lifelong fascination with the world of business, it is unsurprising that her first job wasn’t in the media, but in finance. Joining a Canadian stockbroking firm in 2000, it was her job to talk to clients, give quotes and place orders. Rebecca quickly realised she was more interested in the story behind the stocks, and this led her to follow her passion and pursue journalism as a career.
Rebecca completed a Master of Arts (Writing) at Swinburne University in 2012. In 2018 she deepened her understandings of how journalism, history, literature and research could combine, completing a PhD in Creative Writing at Monash University.
She credits her PhD for homing her skills in problem-solving and critical thinking while enhancing her ability to approach complex financial issues in engaging and informative ways, and her many years at the coalface of breaking news with Bloomberg for giving her a true context to the biggest issues affecting Australia’s economy and capital markets.
She lives in Melbourne with her husband and two children.
